Why I started YARN*

A few press replies, a spontaneous idea and a place to publish our own stories. How YARN* began.

YARN* started while I was trying to get The Million Experience in front of people. I sent out a bunch of personalised press releases and got about two or three responses back. I’d put thought into who I was reaching out to, and it left me thinking about where these stories were supposed to go.

The idea came almost impulsively from there: why don’t I create a space where people can come and read the yarns? I could put my releases somewhere people could actually find them, then put more of my energy into growing the readership. Give the stories a home and build from there.

That’s how this started. I wanted somewhere to publish what was happening around Million Vibes, alongside the music, people and creative work catching my attention outside our own circle. A release can live here, an idea can become a conversation, and someone reading can find a person or a project they want to follow.

The name takes its cue from Nigerian Pidgin, where ‘yarn’ means to talk or have a conversation. ‘Come make we yarn’—come, let’s talk. That invitation feels right to me: sit with a story, hear someone out, bring your own perspective. It’s the feeling I want these pages to have.

I’m interested in the person behind the work as much as the work itself. How did the song come together? What made someone pick up a camera, start a clothing line or make a film? What are they trying to say, and what might I have missed at first? Those are things I want room to get into here.

You’ll see MV releases and updates, my thoughts on what I’m listening to and looking at, and stories from creatives beyond the collective. Music, photography, fashion, film, art, the people organising things and the people documenting them—there’s plenty to yarn about.

I want to grow readers who come back because they’re curious about what’s happening here. People who find something they like, send a story to a friend or put me onto someone I should know about. That’s the part I’m looking forward to building, one post and one reader at a time.

If you’re making something, send it through. You don’t have to be part of Million Vibes. Include the work, the credits and a few words about what I should know. This is my little journal for now, and I’d like it to become a place where our stories keep finding people.

na the yarn be that
